    Life After Graduation

Having been invited to write an article for Aftercollege, a US graduate e-magazine, I pondered on a purposeful topic. Life After Graduation‘ seemed fitting. It’s that time of year, when students and graduates are celebrating (or commiserating), the culmination of the academic year’s study and are looking toward the year ahead. But after the sigh of relief at another academic year past, what next?

Years of study and acquiring a degree level qualification unfortunately does not guarantee the holder the employment toward which they aspire. Yes, I said it! Quite a sobering thought having dedicated years and financial commitment to the pursuit of graduate status. But whilst there is no surefire approach to success, all is not lost.

The simplest approach is to gain relevant work experience. It is unlikely for anyone to graduate and walk straight into their dream job. Rather, one must demonstrate proficiency in the sector and role within which professional success is sought. Continuous professional development must start somewhere and this somewhere is most often the bottom rung of the professional ladder. It is often overlooked, but gaining relevant experience via entry level employment can be a more productive strategy that awaiting the ideal position. The reluctance to do this often stems from a feeling of an entry level post not befitting the intention to ‘go big’. However, bear in mind that one’s starting point can quickly be accelerated beyond when equipped or working toward a qualification in the field. Additionally, the skills and experience acquired along the pathway toward one’s target professional role is invaluable and stands one in good stead of greater insight into the more senior roles as they are in turn acquired. Crucially, acquiring early professional experience can commence prior to graduating or even prior to embarking study, with the right forward planning.

So whether you are commencing, midway to, or have finished acquiring a degree, consider your next steps wisely. Maybe rethink your first steps. And remember, no relevant experience is inadequate unless you fail to apply it to continuing the journey toward your goal profession.

    Oh, and good luck!
